“Zoom Face” Increasing Demand for Porcelain Veneers

  • Jan 20 2021

How long can I realistically expect porcelain veneers to last?

Life has certainly changed since the arrival of social distancing as a means of preventing the spread of the coronavirus. Whatever your situation, there is a good chance that you have had to cancel plans for trips and vacations and have spent far more time at home than going out to eat or attending in-person functions and events. For most of us, that has also meant spending a lot of time on Zoom.

If you’d never heard of Zoom before this year, you are certainly not alone. Now, now only do we wish we’d bought stock in it and other video conferencing platforms, we’ve also become all too familiar with the term “Zoom face”. There’s nothing quite like staring at your own image on your laptop or smartphone and having the realization “Is THAT how I really look???”

While that might be somewhat of an exaggeration, it is true that Zooming with friends, family and co-workers has led to the discovery of a host of facial imperfections we had managed to ignore before. In fact, this has resulted in a global surge in demand for cosmetic procedures.

For some, this has meant appointments for facelifts, eyelid lifts, and nose jobs but for many others, it has encouraged them to want to do something to improve their smiles. One of the silver linings to what has otherwise been a very difficult year is that, for some people, all of those canceled plans and being forced to eat at home has turned out to be a money-saver, and using those extra funds for dental improvements now tops a lot of lists.

You may get by with PJ bottoms and covering your hair with a cap, but there’s simply no way to hide or disguise your smile on a video call. Nothing mars a beautiful smile more than chipped, crooked, or discolored teeth, which is why so many people are turning to porcelain veneers.

Porcelain Dental Veneers

Since their invention nearly a hundred years ago to alter the appearance of movie stars for different parts, dental veneers have gone through a wide range of improvements. Today’s porcelain veneers have become one of the most popular ways to get the smile that boosts confidence and actually makes you look forward to those Zoom calls.

Made of extremely thin layers of porcelain, these dental veneers are bonded to the front exterior surface of existing teeth. Despite the fact that they are super thin, the porcelain is comparable in strength to tooth enamel, which makes them very resilient. Being custom-made, the size, shape, and color can match the individual’s natural teeth. They can also be positioned in a way to address any gaps.

Veneers are not the only means of correcting issues that affect the appearance of your smile. Depending upon the extent of any problems or underlying structural concerns, your dentist will recommend the best option for you. Some of the reasons that porcelain veneers may be deemed advantageous include:

  • Result is an attractive, natural appearance
  • Non-surgical, conservative method
  • Natural teeth remain almost entirely intact
  • Color choice
  • Porcelain is stain resistant
  • Gum tissue typically unaffected by porcelain
  • Durability, porcelain veneers often last 10 to 15 years or longer
