Increasing Popularity of Botox for Men

  • Aug 7 2021

Is it true that more and more men are getting Botox treatments to reduce facial wrinkles?

Is it vain to want to look your best? Is it less than honest to try and adjust your appearance so that the age you look on the outside more closely matches how you feel on the inside?

There are still those who haul out the vanity label for those who have any sort of cosmetic procedure done to look younger, but their numbers are rapidly dwindling. More and more people are recognizing that, in today’s world, appearance matters. This is true in our personal lives but is also being increasingly accepted as a necessary part of how we present ourselves professionally.

No one criticizes the effort to maintain and update our homes, places of business or even our means of transportation. In fact, letting them “show their age” without working to minimize or reverse signs of wear and tear is often a source of judgment from others. Why should it be just the opposite when it comes to our personal appearance?

“Brotox” Anyone?

Even when they felt the need to hide having any sort of “work” done, women have always been more comfortable with cosmetic procedures than men. Fortunately, those days are pretty much over, and men are quickly catching up. Men have always looked to improve their bodies by bulking up or attaining those coveted six pack abs, but now they are also seeking the changes that can come with cosmetic procedures, especially Botox.

Of all non-surgical cosmetic procedures being performed in the U.S., Botox is number one. While there are still more women than men seeking this treatment, the number of men has shot up. Proof of its new popularity and that men have become much more comfortable with it can be seen in it now often being referred to as “Brotox”.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxin that comes from Clostridium botulinum and used to be best known for its role in botulism, which is a scary word because it can be deadly. Fortunately, it takes a high enough concentration of the toxin and  highly specific circumstances for this to happen, including an environment that is anaerobic, low-salt, low-acid, low-sugar and just the right temperature. Clostridium botulinum is normally quite harmless and low doses of Botox have been shown to have a wide range of benefits.

When Botox is injected beneath the skin, often on the face and neck, it blocks the communication between the nerves and muscles. Specifically, the signal to contract, sent from the nerve to the muscle, is not received. This results in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, leaving a smoother and more youthful look.

The most common reason that men make appointments for Botox treatments is to reduce facial lines and wrinkles, but Botox is being used to successfully treat a wide range of conditions. Some of the more common of these are:

  • Migraine – Botox has proven to reduce the frequency of chronic migraines
  • Eye twitching – can reduce or relieve the muscle contractions that cause twitching around the eyes
  • Lazy eye – may help restore the balance in the muscles that are responsible for the position of the eyes
  • hyperhidrosis – this is excessive sweating and Botox injections may help to block the sweat gland nerves that are being over-triggered
  • Cervical dystonia – these are painful and involuntary neck muscle contractions which Botox has been able to lessen
  • Cerebral palsy – this and other neurological conditions that involve overly contracted muscles can be relieved with Botox injections
  • Urinary incontinence – Botox may help with incontinence resulting from an overactive bladder

Whichever your reason for considering Botox, the most important part of your decision is to consult with a highly skilled and experienced healthcare practitioner.
