Crowns & Bridges

A crown or a cap is a permanent cemented covering that fits over an original tooth that is decayed, has been root canaled, damaged or cracked. Crowns are generally made of porcelain over a gold alloy.

A bridge is a permanently cemented dental device that is used to fill a space where a tooth has been removed. It is composed of abutments (attachment teeth) and pontic (false tooth), as seen in the photos above. A bridge may be three or more units.

Bridges safeguard the integrity of existing teeth and help maintain a healthy vibrant smile.  A bridge may be necessary where spaces exist in the mouth to prevent:

  • Multiple shifting of the teeth, leading to eventual loss of those teeth
  • Occlusion (bite) problems TMJ problems
  • Periodontal disease
